I'm also thinking of this possibility. 
1. very loud noise
2. the car is faster than before without needle change ?
This sound like a leakage in the exhaust loop. (engine is running lean, not enough oil)
which engine is it ?
If it is current Nova or OS engine etc ..., the noise will be very very loud, if it is kit engine, the sound is will be louder than normal, but not very very loud.
