Hello all c hing, i got a few questions to ask. First time playing RC. I live in Canada but I am visiting HK this summer. I dont feel like buying RC stuff in Canada cuz of taxes. So i was thinking of getting one of the 3 kits in HK:
TT01D
TB03/TB03D
TA-05

(Budget $2000- 2500 HKD or $250-350 CAN)
I run it mostly in parking lots/drive way around my house. Would like to do some drifting and just racing with friends.
Which of the 3would u recommend. ( im kinda 1516 on which one to pick   ).
Where should i go to get the kit? (What are some good places to get RC stuff in HK). Lastly, What kind of upgrade should i do when i get the kit?

THANK YOU!!!
(Chinese n eng replies are welcome  )

TB-03 夠曬平衡,快車又得,換一換野drift又得
Option:TRF油壓,直軸,單向?
Drift既option同改法最好過drift區問

Hey buddy
To be honest those are all Double Star chasis and I can say they will perform merely the same.... as a parking lot racer.
If im you i will consider which of those is more popular in Canada... as for parts supply concern.

U just need to go to Kwong Wah Street, Mong Kok and u will get what u want.
Have fun !

If so, which one to go with, TB03 or TB03D? Which one is bang for buck ( more value)? And is it possible to get everything goin with TB03 in my budget ( $2000-$2500 HKD)? Possible to bargain at Kwong Wah St in MK?? Anyone knows the relative price for a TB03.TB03D at stores on Kwong Wah St? What are some stores that u would recommend? (Dont need to mention the full name, partial is fine)

Thanks!

TA05 (belt) or TB03 (Shaft) are both good beginner's car from Tamiya.  If you are into drifting, TB03 is a better choice because its shaft driven.

As for your budget, is it just car only or all the rc gears you need? (like batteries, charger, radio, esc & motor) etc...?

hmm hopfully everything, cuz i know tb03 is roughly $1200HKD. And ya, i think im going towards TB03 cuz of the drifting and running on parking lot. Im scared that the belt of TA05 will break easily cuz of some debris of the road, like tiny rocks and sand.
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-4 02:42
I dont own a tb03 so I cant give too much comments.  Tamiya cars are good as 1st time rc player.
For you reference on other parts:
Radio: ~300-400
charger: ~300
batteries: ~200-250 (each pack)
Power Supply: ~200
ESC + Motor: ~ 550 (however, some tamiya kits already comes with basic ESC + motor)
paint: ~30
gears: ~50
tires: ~100

as you see, it adds up quickly.  good luck!

Those belts are harder and stronger than what you think.
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-4 02:50
i have never broken any belts on my car yet.  however, faster motors (like 5.5T or faster) will wear out the belt faster.  It also depends what setup you use on your car.

Also, waht are the motors and ESC that u guys recommend?

With your budget, start with something simple.

The brand new TA05 kit comes with body, tires, 540 motor, and stuffs (I am not sure about the current price now)

You need a set of transmitter kit, esc, battery and charger.

Some suggestions (price in hk$):
V16 esc.... $18x - $2xx
4600 battery..... $2xx
Basic charger..... $15x - $2xx

It is always more expensive to get it in USA or Canada.  However, buying in HK you need to pay shipping.

I live in Toronto. I getting the stuff when i visit HK this summer. Im not sure about the TA05. I heard its a good car, but then i heard that TA05 is good if ur goin with racing on "flat" surface ( proper tracks), but not good for parking lot and drifting.

In Toronto!?
There is a hobby shop on Highway 7 and Woodbine, ask for Albert Lau or Bill Lau.  Tell them you are referred by Alan (who used to work there) and then ask them for a discount!!!  I don't say tax free, but I would say tax included, isn't it much more easier??

Advance Hobbies is exactly the shop I worked with.  Advance Hobbies and this new shop on Highway 7 and Woodbine,  the bosses are brothers.  So, you can just ask them for the number.  I only worked for Albert Lau when he was in Advance Hobbies, and I don't know the new boss with Advance Hobbies now. So, you have to contact Albert or Bill at the new shop now.

I don't remember the name of the shop, since it was opened after I left Toronto.

Sorry, I can't help you on this, since I have left this hobbies for 12yrs and only coming back very recently.  But I like TA05 VerII more.
作者: yikl    時間: 2009-7-4 12:03
hmm..  most ppl runs brushless nowadays.  So you may consider buying brushless set (both esc and motor).  For budget save, you may try hobbywing. Or more expensive, try lrp SPX which fits 11.5T at a cheaper price.

Typical lipo charger around HKD200 - 300.  Quality is ok for practice and bashing around.

Radio is a tricky question.  2.4 is preferred so you won't interfere with other's radio.  You may try Futaba 3PM or Sanwa MX-5 2.4.  But my experience is that after a short while, you will want to upgrade to radio to high end like 4pk, ko ex10 or sanwa mx11.  Because radio last long...  I am using a 3pk with 2.4 module for 5 years already.

Hope this helps.
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-4 18:02
i agree with yikl...  most rc players will keep the radio for a long time.  its better to buy a better radio at first.  however, if you have a tight budget, just get the entry level one (like 3pl).

The Yeah Racing Brainpower RSC = HobbyWing ESC
there is a 35A and a 60A version.
35A supports upt o 9T, while 60A supports up to 5.5T
get the 60A version as its not that much more expensive, but you can use faster motors in the future.
作者: resound    時間: 2009-7-5 01:20
One silly question, for the pinion gear does it have to match with the motor. Say like if i get a 9T motor, do i need to get a 9 T pinion? Cuz i dont rly get the ratio thing.

resound 發表於 2009-7-5 01:20

No, you have the wrong concept.

Motor: 13T, 12T etc.... or 13.5R, 11.5R ... 3.5R  are the rating/ speed of the motor.
The lower the number (ie 3.5R) the faster the motor.  Faster motors need higher rating ESC or else the ESC will burn.

For beginners, you can start with 13T or 13.5R (brushless)  if you want to save some $, you can also start with brushed ESC + motors (silver / black cans)
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-5 01:46
As for the pinion, it is the gear that connects to the motor.  Lower teeth pinion gives 'better' accerleration, while higher teeth pinion gives 'better' top speed.  You cannot use too small pinion or too high pinion else the motor will get too hot and burn out.

Usually when you buy a specific car, the manual will tell you which pinion to use for a given motor.

the final drive ratio (FDR) is a formula, which is like this:
(Spur size / Pinion size) x (Internal Gear Ratio)  = (FDR)

The internal gear ratio is different for each car.

Thx for the tips and help. If i go with TB03 instead of TB03D, what kind of setup do i need for drift ( feel like doing both racing at parking lot and doing drift).
Is it possible to have 1 car for both drift and race?
And as for gear ratio, is it the lower FDR, the better( meaning closer to 1:1). From the TB03 manual, the 64T Spur Gear with a 27T pinion has 5.77:1 gear ratio, what does that mean? Im still abit confused after reading the thread of gear.

My private track is the parking lot and the back lane of my house.... haha~

My Ta05 drives fast, and can drift well.... it's all depends on your setting.
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-6 10:31
--> ...kind of setup do i need for drift...
Setup for drift:
1) Drift Tires (must)
2) Gear box setup.  Some people prefer Spool for front and rear. (optional)

Setup for Fast Car:
1) High grip tires
2) Rear usually ball diff.  Front can use spool/one-way/ball diff

--> Is it possible to have 1 car for both drift and race?
Yes

--> FDR
Lower FDR means faster for a given motor.  (but in the expense of heat)
Any motor would have a suggested range of FDR.  for eg: 13.5R motor, manufacturer suggests 5.0 to 6.5.... so its better to find gears to fit that FDR.

in your example: 64T Spur, 27T Pinion, FDR = 5.77...
since FDR = (Spur/Pinion)xInternalGearRatio
so InternalGearRatio = FDR x Pinion / Spur  = 5.77 x 27 / 64 = 2.43.

This means TB03's internal gear ratio is 2.43  (this number does NOT change, unless you change the size of the pulleys)

Thx fot the gear ratio and setting help. I went to ask Advance Hobbies 2day (one at sheppard and Midland/Kennedy) n they said they can give me a TT01 + Fast Charger/Batter + Radio/ Servo/ ESC/ Receiver for total of $300 (around $2000HKD).

If i get a
TB03
Futaba Mega Tech 2PL
Yeah Racing 9T motor
60A ESC
Charger+ Batter

in HK, it will be around $2900 (based on rcmart price)
If i dont get the 9T motor n use the Stock
It will be around$2600

Which deal should i take? Im like 1516. Do u guys think i can get a better price at KWS?
Obviously i dont rly want to spend too much on it.
Please give me to advice!
THX
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-7 10:27
reference prices at KWS:
2PL(AM) - $300ish
Hobbywing 60A + 9T - $700ish
Charger + battery - $500ish
TB03 - dont know price
TT01 - from $6xx to $9xx (depends on body, option etc)

If you are coming to HK, get it in HK.  If not, get it locally or mail order.
I find RC prices in HK very cheap.
作者: resound    時間: 2009-7-7 22:01
TT01 price in HK looks attractive, but is it "future prove"? Is it a waste of money to get a TT01?
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-7 22:54
no car is future proof. but tamiya tt01 cars is good for beginners because it has fewer, cheaper, and easy to find parts.  however, tb03 is newer than tt01... so in theory, tb03 should be more 'future proof'.
作者: hardmankam    時間: 2009-7-7 22:57
another consideration for you could be M05.  m class is quite fun and has few parts and m05 just launched!
作者: defcone    時間: 2009-7-7 23:03
One shop in KWS sell a set of tt01 for 9xx. I forgot whether it include battery/charger, but it include car, and all radio gear.

Will there be n e one goin to KWS and can get me the price for TB03 and TA05?
